Your Core Beliefs

You may also notice that you tend to fall into certain patterns when you think. These patterns are based on core beliefs you developed growing up. You may not even be aware that they exist.

Here are some examples of core beliefs:

  • I am a good person

  • Everyone should be treated fairly

  • People are not to be trusted
until you get to know them well

  • All humans are generally good people

  • People will take advantage
of you if you let them

  • I am ugly

  • People should always listen to me

  • Everyone’s opinion is valid

Your core beliefs strongly influence how you interact with others. For example, maybe you have the belief that everyone should be treated fairly. If you believe that another person treated you unfairly, you are more likely to be offended by their behavior. This could lead you to react negatively toward him or her.

The beliefs you have about yourself and others can make you either more or less likely to engage in a harassing behavior toward another person.
