Getting Help

When should a person seek professional help for anger? Some degree of anger will be with us all our lives. Ask yourself, “Is my anger working for me?”

When you get angry...

  • Is it mild?
  • Is it infrequent?
  • Does it fade quickly?
  • Do you express things assertively?
  • Do you express anger without aggression?

If you answered "yes" to most of these, you are probably not experiencing negative legal or relationship problems because of your anger. It may even be working to help you resolve conflict.

However, when you get angry...

  • Is it intense?
  • Is it frequent?
  • Do you hold grudges?
  • Do you plan to get even?
  • Does it turn to aggressive behavior?

If you answered "yes" to most of these, there is cause for alarm. You are likely at risk for negative relationship, health, and legal consequences.
