Recognizing Coercive Behavior

Coercion is when a person uses threats or persuasion to get someone to do something they don’t really want to do.

The main goal of a person who uses manipulation and coercion is to gain control over situations and people. They may use a combination of fear, guilt, punishment, false concern, exaggerated praise, or blame.

  • Everybody’s doing it
    We’ve had sex before, so you can’t say no now
    If you were my friend, you would do this for me
    Sex is the way to prove your love for me
  • You are soooo amazing! I can’t imagine ever being as good as you!
    If you don’t do this, everyone is going to find out
    I’ve spent a ton of money on you. This is the least that you could do.
