Research has found a connection between different forms of violence. Some of the factors of sexual violence, for example, are also factors of physical violence.

There are skills that protect against multiple forms of abuse or violence, such as conflict resolution skills, anger management, impulse control, and developing the skill of empathy.

When children grow up in safe, stable, and nurturing relationships and environments, they often learn these skills without realizing it. Children raised in an unsafe or unstable environment are more likely to learn only coping skills instead.

Coping skills can make it difficult to maintain healthy relationships, so it’s important to practice and learn these protective skills.
