Being Assertive

Being Assertive

There are four main behavior types:

  • Assertive
  • Aggressive
  • Passive
  • Passive Aggressive

The most respectful way to communicate with others is to be assertive. Assertive communication is direct and clear, not threatening or manipulative.

Communicating assertively includes telling others when you are uncomfortable, honestly expressing your thoughts and feelings, or letting someone know when you feel they have been hurtful or unfair.

Aggressive, passive aggressive, and passive behaviors can lead to harassment or abuse in a relationship. Assertive behavior is the healthiest way to communicate within any relationship.
