Coping - Eating

When the body is in fight or flight mode, it shuts down the digestive system in order to preserve energy for activities that are more important. Your body figures that in an emergency you won't be stopping for a bite to eat.

When you eat, your trick your brain into thinking that it's safe. It's physically impossible to be afraid and to eat at the same time. As soon as you start eating, your fight or flight response shuts down and your body relaxes. Your digestive system "turns back on" and your heart slows down.

The problem is that once we are done eating, if we haven't dealt with the stressor in a healthy way, we go right back into high-alert mode.
