Because stimulants increase focus and attention, they are sometimes used as “study drugs” by students who are trying to get an extra edge for finals or an important test.

Does it work?
No. Research has found students who use non-prescription stimulants gained no advantage over their peers who didn’t use. (Arria, 2018) (Munro, 2017).

In fact, the average person who abuses prescription stimulants:

  • Typically has lower grades than those who don’t abuse these drugs
  • Is more likely than other students to drink alcohol heavily and use other illicit drugs
  • May use prescription stimulants to party longer, and mix them with other substances to get high
