How is it Organized?

The video training has five modules, each about five minutes in length. In each module, Professor of Behavioral and Community Health, Dr. Scott Walters describes the basic principles and strategies of Motivational Interviewing. Video examples show how the skills are used in typical office visits.

#1 Overview
The first video describes the basic logic of Motivational Interviewing with an emphasis on the principle of autonomy support.

#2 Questions and Affirmations
This module demonstrates how to use open questions and affirmations to build rapport and encourage clients to talk about material.

#3 Reflections and Summaries
This module shows how to use reflections and summaries to build rapport, reinforce client statements, and encourage further talk.

#4 Listening Strategically
This part shows how to use Open Questions, Affirmations, Reflections and Summaries strategically to draw out motivational talk.

#5 Putting it Together
This part demonstrates one technique to encourage people to talk about their most important reasons for change and level of confidence in their ability to make changes.

The MI Handbook accompanies the training. The handbook provides much more detail and examples on how to use MI in different scenarios. The manual also includes a list of further resources, and examples of motivational feedback reports provided to the clients after they have completed Under the Influence or Marijuana 101 course.
