What is Title IX?

Title IX is the part of the Educational Amendments of 1972 which prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity. Title IX and subsequent laws and rulings were established to protect students from sexual harassment and other forms of sexual violence and gender based harassment (including sexual assault, stalking, and domestic or dating violence).

If a student experiences a hostile environment due to sexual violence, Title IX requires that the school take immediate action to eliminate the harassment, prevent reoccurrence, and address its effects.
