In order to get a sense of the types of behaviors we will be looking at in this course, it is important to understand how to classify ALL behaviors. There are many ways people express emotions and beliefs. Think about people you know. How do they interact with others? Think about yourself. How do you express opinions and interact with others? Try to think of at least one person or behavior that fits with each of the categories below. There are four main categories: aggressive, passive aggressive, passive, or assertive. Most of our behaviors fall into one of these four categories.
A person who is passive aggressive has aggressive motives but acts passively. Think of it as smiling at a person while you are stabbing them in the back. Passive aggressive behaviors are indirect. They are subtle and manipulative. Relational harassment is often passive aggressive.
Examples of passive aggressive behaviors include:

Assertive behavior is the most healthy and respectful way to communicate. When someone is assertive, they respect the rights of others. They also respect their own rights. They directly express feelings. They are not threatening or aggressive.
Examples of assertive behaviors include:

Instead, they place the other individual’s needs above their own. When you engage in passive behaviors, you can put yourself in a position to be taken advantage of by others.
Examples of passive behaviors include:
